Numbers greater than 999 are organized into groups of three, and the groups are separated by commas. The first grouping occurs with the number one thousand, which appears in numbers as 1,000. The second grouping occurs at one million (1,000,000).

The third grouping can be somewhat confusing. It is called one billion. The problem arises because one billion in the English speaking world means something different than one billion in the rest of the world. A million is a thousand thousands (1,000 x 1,000). The next logical progression in the English speaking world is a thousand millions (1,000 x 1,000,000). In the English speaking world, a billion is just that, a thousand millions.

In the rest of the world however, a billion is a million millions (1,000,000 x 1,000,000, or 1,000,000,000,000).

But this answer will concentrate on things as they are in the English speaking world: a billion is a thousand millions, and appears in numbers as 1,000,000,000.

The next grouping is a thousand billions (1,000 x 1,000,000,000). It is called a trillion, and appears in numbers as 1,000,000,000,000.

Starting from the right, when you pass the first comma you are into the thousands, and after you reach the second comma, you're into the millions. The third comma brings you into the billions, and the fourth into the trillions.

So the grouping of numbers, by threes, goes: thousands, millions, billions, and then trillions. And remember, you start on the right and work to the left when grouping the numbers by threes.
Trillion in numbers is 1,000,000,000,000.

That's a 1, followed either by 12 zeros (short scale), or 18 zeros (long scale). The short scale is usually used in English-speaking countries.
