"of" means "times" in math so 20 percent OF 27 is 0.2 x 27

This is correct, and a lot quicker than my method, but I'll give it to you anyway.

I use proportions.

First percent means "out of 100" so:

20/100

Then you have of 27. So 27 would become a denominator:

x/27

You now have:

20/100 x/27

and you cross multiply, getting 540 and 100x.

You want x alone so you have x=.

Therefore, you divide 540 by 100 and get 5.4.
