Given:

11/12-3/8

In order to add or subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator, called the least common denominator (LCD). Find the LCD by listing the multiples of each denominator. The lowest multiple they have in common is the LCD.

8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40.....

12: 12, 24.....

The LCD is 24.

Now multiply each fraction by a fraction equal to one that will make the denominator24. For example, 3/3 = 1. This will change the numbers but keep the values of the fractions the same.

11/12 x 2/2-3/8 x 3/3 =

(11 x 2)/(12 x 2)-(3 x 3)/(8 x 3) =

22/24-9/24 =

13/24
