An equivelant fraction is a fraction that means the same thing as another. For example, if I had 1/2, I'd know that 1/2 if half of a number. So, I can take any number that can be divided by 2, in this case I'll use 100, and divide it by 2. 100 divided by 2 is 50, so 50/100 is half of 100, or 1/2. So, 50/100 is equivalent to 1/2. Here's an easy way to do it: Q: What is an equivalent fraction to 1/3? Solve It: Take the 1 from 1/3. 1xr=r Whatever you multiplied the top number by, you must multiply the bottom number by: Take the 3 from 1/3. 3xr=3r Put together the two numbers you just got: r/3r A: r/3r is equivalent to 1/3. You can replace the r with whatever number you want. Let's replace it with 6: Take the 1 from 1/3. 1x6=6 Whatever you multiplied the top number by, you must multiply the bottom number by: Take the 3 from 1/3. 3x6=18 Put together the two numbers you just got: 6/18 A: 6/18 is equivalent to 1/3.
A equivalent fraction have the same value, even though they may look different.
