This is because 18 is a factor of itself and of 54 and certainly there can be no greater factor.

Another way to do this is to write each number as the product of its prime factors.

18= 32 x2
54=33 x2

Now the common factors are 32 and 2 and their product is 18.

One last way, write out the factors of each as a list and find the largest one the two lists have in common.
