40 (or -40). The "mean proportional" is usually called the geometric mean. For two numbers, it is the square root of their product. In this case, the product is 1600, and the square root is 40. The term "mean proportional" means that it gives rise to two equal proportions: -8/40 is equal to 40/-200. In general, if M is the geometric mean of A and B, A/M is equal to M/B. Obviously, the sign doesn't matter: -8/-40 is also equal to -40/-200. The order of the two numbers also doesn't matter, since -200/40 is equal to 40/-8.
