There are a number of ways:

  • Create a number line that includes the numbers -7, -1, and the numbers in between and count the distance (6 units).
  • Take the larger (which is the furthest to the right on the number line) which is -1 and subtract the smallest (the -7) using the the rules of arithmetic: -1 - (-7) = -1+7 = 6
  • Realize that the distance between -7 and -1 is the same as the distance between 1 and 7, which is 6.

Notice that the distance between two numbers is the same as the difference between two numbers.
