The original inch from Egyptian times was 2.5cm. The Egyptian cubit was 40 inches. The Egyptian gallon was 6in^3 cubic inches or 216 cubic inches. The gallon was called a standard measure of the Egyptians as was the pint and the bushel. Our volume measures derive from the ancient Egyptians as seen in the binary relationships like 2 cups =pint; 2 pints =quart; 2 quarts= pottle; 2 pottle = gallon. There are 8 gallons to a cubic foot or bushel. A barrel is 4 cubic feet or 32 gallons. The Egyptians measures were all related to the earth and the "foot" was an integral part, 2/3 cubit. The pint is f/4 cubed, the gallon is f/2 cubed, the bushel is f cubed. Over time the respect for standards slipped and the Egyptian standards were degraded or forgotten. The inch now is 2.54 cm and the foot is 30.48 cm . By the Egyptian measure the speed of light is 1 Billion feet/second or 600 Million Egyptian(Nautical) Miles/hour.
