Objects float because the mass of the water they displace is greater than their own mass.Take, for example, a 10 cubic foot barrel placed in a fresh water lake. Visualize a small barrel about 18 inches in diameter by just over 2 feet long. Let's assume that the barrel weighs 10 pounds when empty.Water has a mass of about 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. The 10 cubic foot barrel, if sunk, would displace about 624 pounds of water.
