In physics intensity is the energy density (that is, the energy per unit volume) multiplied it by the velocity at which the energy is moving. The resulting vector has the units of power divided by area, that is in watts per m². It is possible to define the intensity of the water coming from a garden sprinkler, but intensity is used most frequently with waves (i.e. sound or light).

Magnitude is a measure of the size of a mathematical object.

Volcanic activity is measured by a Volcanic Explosivity Index. VOI.

Earthquakes are measured either by Modified Mercalli Scale, if one is interested in building behaviour; or the Richter scale (or its modifiers) if one is concerned with the source energy of earthquakes.

Stars also have a magnitude scale for comparison.
