There is generally no point in asking "why" questions about physical facts. The Earth _is_ about 8.3 light-minutes from the Sun, and there isn't really a "why" to that.

If the Earth were substantially closer to the Sun or much further away, then the life forms that we see around us would not have developed, or would have developed much differently. We are the products of our environment, and our environment is the Earth the way it is.
