It is a unit of mass measure.

The word can be split into two parts. viz. 'kilo' AND 'gram'.

'kilo' is 'a thousand' and is from Classical Greece.

'Gram' is 'mass' and again comes from Classical Greece.

So the word 'kilogram' means 'one thousand masses'. or in modern terms one thousand grams.

Similarly

kilometre

kilo ; a thousand

metre ' a measure

So kilometre is a thousand measures. In modern terms about 5/8 of an Imperial Mile.
