A polygon is any closed, plane figure made up of line segments. The endpoints of each line segment is connected to the endpoints of two adjacent segments. The point where two segments meet is called a vertex. The segments themselves are referred to as the sides of the polygon. The number of sides will equal the number of vertices.

Polygons are classified by the number of sides they possess for example, triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, undecagon, dodecagon, triskadecagon, tetradecagon... are names of polygons with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 sides (respectively).

A figure with nine sides is called a "nonagon".
