xy = 168

x + y = 34

Thus, x = 34 - y

(34 - y)y = 168

34y - y2 = 168

-y2 + 34y - 168 = 0

I don't like leading negative signs, so I multiply by -1:

y2 - 34y + 168 = 0

You can use the quadratic formula here: [34 ± sqrt(1156 - 672)] / 2 = [34 ± 22] / 2 = 17 ± 11 = 28 or 6. These two numbers are the solution.
