If you imagine all numbers on a line with 0 in the middle, this will become clear:

-10, -9, -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

The numbers further to the right are larger.

-3 is further right than -5, so -3 is larger.
