In mathematics and physics, a scalar field associates a scalar
value to every point in a space. The scalar may either be a
mathematical number, or a physical quantity.

A scalar means that there is no direction associated to the
number. The scalar number can be associated to a mass, a length, or
a speed so as long as there is no direction associated to it. If
there is a direction, than it becomes a vector.

Scalar product of two vectors is a scalar as it involves only
the magnitude of the two vectors multiplied by the cosine of the
angle between the vectors.

In mathematics, a field is a set with certain operators (such as
addition and multiplication) defined on it and where the members of
the set have certain properties.
In a vector field, each member of this set has a value AND a
direction associated with it. In a scalar field, there is only vaue
but no direction.
