Retired Numbers

The retired Red Sox numbers of Bobby Doerr (1), Joe Cronin (4), Johnny Pesky (6), Carl Yastrzemski (8), Ted Williams (9), and Carlton Fisk (27), along with Jackie Robinson's #42 that was retired by Major League Baseball in 1997, are posted on the right field facade in Fenway Park. (Jim Rice #14 joins the wall with his induction into the Hall of Fame 2009)

The Red Sox' policy on retiring uniform numbers is based on the following criteria:

What is the longest home run hit in Fenway park?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I am going to revise his previous answer, because I do not agree. Although there have been some long bombs out of the park, the longest MEASURABLE home run was hit by Ted Williams on June 6, 1946.

A vivid reminder of the greatness Ted Williams bestowed upon the Red Sox franchise is the single red seat (location of where the ball landed) that stands out amongst its green counterparts in the right field bleachers.

On June 9, 1946, the Splendid Splinter connected off of Detroit's Fred Hutchinson for the longest home run ever hit into the Fenway bleachers.

56-year-old Joe Boucher, a construction engineer from Albany, New York, was in the seat when the ball, which traveled 502 feet, fell from the sky and deflected off his straw hat. But Boucher didn't end up with the ball, adding, "after it hit my head, I was no longer interested."

The seat, located in section 42, row 37, seat 21, was painted red to commemorate Williams' titanic blast, although at the time of the home run the bleachers were real bleachers and not individual seats.

All these years later, Red Sox fans, well aware of the seat's history, can be seen flocking to the area after each home game to have their picture taken in or around the seat.

While straight line measuring marks the spot at 502 feet, contemporary analysis by HitTracker has estimated the true distance of the home run to be between 520 and 535 feet, due to the elevation of the Fenway bleachers. No other player at Fenway Park has ever hit that seat since, although David Ortiz has come close.

Are umbrella's allowed inside Fenway Park?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

On the Chicago Cubs website, the security page that lists items that can and cannot be taken into Wrigley Field does not list umbrellas on either list. It's probably safe to assume that umbrellas can be taken in, but it should be verified with a call to Wrigley Field.

How do you view batting practice at Fenway Park?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Easy. Batting practice starts at Fenway around 3 hrs. before game time. You don't need a special ticket, but you do need your regular ticket. They will just let you in. In Major League Baseball each team will have about one hour of batting practice. Gates at Fenway Park open two hours before the first pitch. At that time the Red Sox, (Home Team) will have already been on the field practicing for about half an hour. After they finish then the visiting team practices for an hour, followed by pre-game activities, followed by the first pitch. The exact times may vary slightly and for some games there may be no pre-game practice. However, to see the Red Sox take batting practice you will need to be on line and enter the park when the gates open.

How many people does fenway park hold?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

38,805

Fenway Park had the smallest seating capacity in the major leagues for a number of years, but that is no longer the case. A number of the classic ballparks had seating capacities under 40,000, and some were smaller than Fenway. Montreal's Jarry Park was smallest of all the modern ballparks, at about 28,000. At the time of Jarry Park's closing in 1977, the other old ballparks were gone, and Fenway's capacity was listed (according to Sporting News Baseball Guides) at 33,513, making it the smallest in the majors at that point. Fenway began to grow incrementally over the next three decades, as pockets of seating areas were added from time to time. For the 2007 season, Fenway Park's capacity was increased to 38,805, rendering Fenway as the third smallest, behind Tropicana Field and PNC Park. (McAfee Coliseum has the smallest official capacity in the majors due to a tarp over the upper deck, but with those seats it is larger than any of these. McAfee's replacement, Cisco Field, should become the smallest park when it opens.) By Fenway Park's centennial in 2012, the team has announced that capacity could be increased to as much as 39,968. Capacity has increased in recent years as additional rows have been added in front of the field boxes in former foul territory (the "Dugout Seats"), on top of "The Green Monster" (the "Monster Seats"), atop the right field roof (the "Right Field Roof Seats"), in 2006 to the roof boxes (the "Pavilion Seats"), which has been raised by about 10 feet, to the former .406 Club (now the EMC club and HP Pavilion), and in 2007 through the addition of "Conigliaro's Corner" in right field and additional standing room in left field. There have been proposals to increase the seating capacity to as much as 45,000 through the expansion of the upper decks, while others (notably former team owners, the JRY Trust) have called for razing the historic ballpark entirely and building a similar, but larger and more modern, scalable facility nearby. Any such action would likely be met by strong local opposition. Fenway Park also has standing room areas on the Roof, HP Pavilion, Green Monster and throughout the park.
