The group people chosen by the voters to elect the president and the vice president of the united states?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They are "electors" and as a group they are the "electoral college." Voters in Presidential elections are actually selecting the electors who represent a given party or candidate.

Under the US Contitution, voters in each state select Presidential Electors who meet in their State Capitals and vote on the Presidential slates. Together, these Electors constitute the Electoral College, although the College never meets all together in one place.

Although Electors are usually pledged to vote for one slate or another, there is no constitutional requirement that they do so. Originally they were expected to vote as they thought best for their states and the country.

Ann Bates childhood biography?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Ann Bates was a schoolteacher in Philadelphia, and a loyalist spy for the British. She joined Henry Clinton's espionage sometime in 1778. As she was a spy, she posed as a peddler, selling thread, needles, knives, and utensils to American camp members. She travels through American camps selling these goods and looking and recording American weapons, men, anything that would be of good information for her leader. When her goods were all sold she went back to a British camp and reported all of her findings. While returning from spying on American troops Bates had been arrested, searched, and imprisoned for one day and night. Then released. She reported to Major Drummond and was sent out to spy again on July 29, 1778. While spying she was asked to look for a disloyal American troop. She had found one named Chambers. He shared important information to Bates. Though she found out that he had died 3 weeks later. Bates gathered information that American troops were headed to Rhode Island. She inaccurately reported it to Clinton on August 6, 1778. She told him that the troops had not yet gone to Rhode Island. Bates went to Washington's headquarters in the White Plains, NY, she overheard one of his aides say that boats were being prepared for landing on Long Island. Bates went back to Clinton to report the information. That info influenced Clinton's decision to send more troops to defend Rhode Island, forcing American and French armies to withdraw from Newport on August 31. Then on May 12, 1780 Bates left Clinton's espionage ring and worked with her husband as a gun repairman with the British Army, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Hoop Earrings Make A Fashionable Statement?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hoop earrings have a long and varied history as jewelry for both men and women over the past several hundred years. At different points of time they have been worn by pirates, and by gypsies. Today, however, they are worn in a variety of different styles and metals by women in positions as varied as lawyers and dancers.

Hoop earrings are available primarily in gold and sterling silver metals, though they also can be purchased in expensive platinum, and exotic rose gold. Less expensive metal hoop earrings are also sold by accessory stores. Hoop earrings may also be worked in multiple metals, such as gold and sterling silver, or even gold, sterling silver, and copper or rose gold. Hoop earrings are also available in one or more metals, accented with small diamond baguettes or even smaller diamond accent chips.

While gypsies were known for their large, flamboyant, gold hoop earrings, today hoop earrings are available in both this style and smaller and more streamlined styles. Small and thin hoop earrings are especially popular with women in formal business positions, which require a streamlined appearance. Hoop earrings in traditional metals, such as gold or silver, are often these women's standard jewelry to go to work. Hoop earrings encrusted with diamonds, or other precious or semi precious gemstones, are typically reserved for more formal occasions. These hoop earrings, especially those with larger channel set diamonds, are appropriate for after hours events, such as formal dinners, weddings, and cocktail parties. The larger, more flamboyant, gold hoops mentioned above, are popular with younger girls who enjoy wearing them as an expression of their personal taste.

Hoop earrings may be purchased from a wide variety of retailers. Individually owned jewelers sell hoop earrings that the jeweler may have crafted himself, or have purchased through a jewelry wholesaler. These hoop earrings often are among the most unique, however, department store jewelry departments and large jewelry store chains often have a wider variety. Department stores, such as Macy's and Lord and Tailor, often have hoop earrings available for sale in a wide range of price points. Earrings which have a greater total carat weight of diamonds or high quality of gold will cost more.

Did Nerva have failures?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Nerve’s three major weaknesses were the circumstances of his proclamation as emperor, his desire to be a benign rule and the fact that he was childless. His predecessor, emperor Domitian was assassinated because he was a tyrannical ruler who instituted many treason trials against his opponents. Yet, Rome remained deeply divided. Despite many people hating Domitian, there were still many people who supported him. Nerva failed to deal with this situation.

Nerva was proclaimed emperor by the senate in haste, within hours of the news of the assassination of Domitian to prevent a civil war. He might have been considered a safe choice because he was old and childless. He lacked widespread support in the empire. Despite the fact that many senators suffered with Domitian’s many treason trials, there still was a pro-Domitian faction in the senate. Therefore, Nerva’s attempts to involve the senate in his government were only partially successful, even though he stopped the treason trials, returned the property confiscated by Domitian to its owners, released the people who had been imprisoned and gave amnesty to those who had been exiled.

To gain support among the people Nerva gave a sum of money to each Roman citizen, granted a large number of plots of land for the poor, exempted people from the inheritance tax and made loans to the rich conditional to paying an interest of 5% to the local council for the support of the needy. However, the expenses that this generosity involved got the treasury into trouble.

To appease the Praetorian (imperial) Guard, Nerva gave them a generous donation and sacked their head, who had been involved in Domitian’s assassination. However, support for Domitian was still strong in the army and the Praetorian Guard considered his measures insufficient. They demanded the execution of the assassins, but Nerva refused.

In his efforts to be a benign ruler, Nerva allowed the senate to continue to prosecute those who had been Domitian’s informers. This led to anarchy as the senators acted in their personal interest and tried to settle scores with personal enemies. It was said that Domitian’s tyranny was preferable to Nerva’s anarchy. A plot against him was discovered, but he refused to execute the conspirators. This met the disapproval of the senate. As he had no heir, Nerva considered adopting the governor of Syria to have him as his successor. This was opposed by those who supported general Trajan. The Praetorian Guard sieged his palace, took him hostage and forced him to meet their demand to hand over the assassins of Domitian for execution. His reputation was irreparably damaged. Nerva realised that without the support of the senate and the army his position was untenable. He adopted Trajan as his successor and shared power with him. Three months later he had a stroke and died soon afterwards. His reign lasted only just over 16 months.

Iowa brass knuckles law?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Technically it is legal for you to own them as long as they are carried in the confines of your own home or on private property that you possess. Iowa does not do a very good job of clarifying this as they do not expressly mention brass knuckles or anything like them in the wording of their laws.

However, read Chapter 724.4, subsection 1 which I have paraphrased below.

724.4 Carrying weapons.

1. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who goes armed with a dangerous weapon concealed on or about the person, or who, within the limits of any city, goes armed with a pistol or revolver, or any loaded firearm of any kind, whether concealed or not, or who knowingly carries or transports in a vehicle a pistol or revolver, commits an aggravated misdemeanor.

Nowhere in Chapter 724 do they mention brass knuckles and do not define brass knuckles under offensive weapons in Chapter 724.1. However, from the quote above, "a dangerous weapon" could be construed to mean brass knuckles. Having done a little bit of quick case law search from Iowa, brass knuckles generally fall under this category of "dangerous weapon" making them illegal. The exception to making them illegal if they indeed are lies in Chapter 724.4, subsection 4, part a which can be seen below.

4. Subsections 1 through 3 do not apply to any of the following:

a. A person who goes armed with a dangerous weapon in the person's own dwelling or place of business, or on land owned or possessed by the person.

How big was a pyramid block?

User Avatar

The blocks on the pyramids are all different sizes. The blocks on the bottom are the largest; the blocks get smaller as they go up. The size of the bottom blocks of the Giza Pyramid are 1.5 meters tall, 1.5 meters wide, and 2.25 meters deep. A block this size would weigh 8.44 kg (9.3 tons). Some of the blocks weigh as much as 80 tons!

Did the Normans have slaves?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Normans in England did not have slaves. However, they did have a social structure called the 'Feudal System'. The lowest order of people in this system were 'Serfs'.

Serfs were effectively tied to the land that they farmed. and had to give part of their crop/harvest to the local baron.

NB In England, throughout history, slavery has never been part of the social structure. Also England was the first country to pass the 'Abolition of Slavery Act' in 1833, thirty years before the American and thir Civil War(when slavery was abolished). This was to try and stop the slave trade across the Atlantic from Africa top the America. Slaves involved in the slave trade never/rarely came to England.

The Latin for 'Slave' is 'Servus' , from which we have the words, 'Servant', Service,' and or courser 'Serf' (Norman French, not English).

When did the French Revolution take place?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The French Revolution is a misleading term. There have been at least 23 French Revolutions. The first one started on 14th July 1789 when the starving people of Paris attacked the Bastille, a fortress on the edge of town, because a) they needed some guns and b) the Bastille was a prison where the King could send anybody, any time, without question or trial. The mob, armed with muskets and one or two cannon from Les Invalides, battered at the walls and told the Governor that his life would be spared if he surrendered. The Governor surrendered. His head was removed with a blunt knife. The mob then rushed to rescue the prisoners. It turned out there were only seven of them, as the King wasn't using that prison any more. Bother. Meanwhile at Versailles the King, wanting more tax money, had called Parliament to meet for the first time in 150 years. Mistake. In theory, he should have got what he wanted. Parliament had three houses, or 'Estates'; the Nobility, the Clergy and the Third Estate, which meant the common people. (Incidentally, this is where we get the term 'Third World' from.) The Nobility and Clergy didn't pay taxes, so were only too willing to give the King what he wanted. The Third Estate paid all the taxes and would obviously vote against more; but each Estate had only one vote. The members of the Third Estate responded to this constitutional unfairness by locking themselves in the King's indoor tennis court and swearing not to leave until France had a new constitution. The King gave in, then changed his mind, then sent for troops to back up his authority; which was why the common people in Paris needed guns to defend themselves. When the King heard about the Bastille business he said 'Oo dear, is this a revolt?' and was answered 'No, Sire, it's a Revolution'. He allowed the Third Estate a new voting system, but they didn't trust him and he was escorted to Paris where an eye could be kept on him. He tried to escape and was imprisoned. Every other King in Europe protested. The new French Government declared war on every King in Europe. The King was convicted of plotting with France's enemies, and guillotined. Reign of Terror. All enemies of Revolution go on chopping list. Enemies defeated. War over, Terror no longer necessary, its leaders are executed. France without leaders, General Napoleon Bonaparte takes over. 1804, he becomes Emperor Napoleon. More wars. 1814, King back (Louis XVIII); 1815, Napoleon returns for 100 days, then Waterloo and King back. Succeeded by his son Charles X. Unpopular. 1830, Revolution. Louis-Philippe, constitutional monarchy. 1848, Revolution. Second Republic. President, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, great-nephew of guess who. 1852, Second Empire, Napoleon III. 1870, war with Prussia. France loses. Paris besieged. Emperor abdicates. Third Republic. New Government surrenders Paris. Revolution in Paris (the Commune). French army invades Paris. 20,000 Parisians killed in a week. Paris comes to heel. 1940, Germans invade. Dictatorship. 1945, Fourth Republic. At the moment, we're on the Fifth Republic and still counting.
The French Revolution took place from 1789 to 1799.
The French Revolution officially started in 1789 and ended in 1799.
From 1789 to 1799.

What does cry God for Harry England and St George mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is from Shakespear's play ' King Henry (V) '[ the fifth]. It is an inspirational statement to all Englishmen who fought with him (King Henry ) at the Battle of Agincourt.

Even today it is still an inspirational acclamation.

To 'Cry God for Harry, England and St. George.

To 'Cry' does not mean 'boo' hoo' , but a shout of acclamation; a cheer.

'God' is the Christian God. People were much more religious , when this battle was fought, and it means that that God is on the Englishman's side, and will protect Englishmen.

'Harry' is a nickname for the name 'Henry' ( King Henry (V)). It is still used today , as Prince Harry ( he is formally Prince Henry).

'England' that nation they are all from and wish to fight for, and protect.

'St. George' is the patron saint of England, he slew the dragon. His flag is a white flag, with a red perpendicular cross and still refers to as the flag of England. He is like a national mascot.

Be you an Englishman or not, hope that helps with your understanding!!!!!
