Would a tuba and ukulele duet sound good?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It would depend entirely on the composition. The biggest danger is that the trumpet is going to overwhelm the clarinet and both of them are going to over power the ukulele. You would have to amplify the ukulele, but they are all musical instruments and they can be blended. It won't be easy, but it can be done.

According to an article by Douglas Yeo (the Bass Trombonist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra:

"...The base scale pay for members of the top American orchestras (Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia) is approximately $2000+/week (minimum guaranteed scale). These orchestras typically offer 10 weeks paid vacation, full medical and dental coverage, generous sick leave, a pension (after 30 years service or the "rule of 85" which provides a full pension to players whose age and years of service combined equal 85) of over $70,000/year, and many other excellent benefits. After passing an initial probationary period (of one to three years depending on the orchestra's policy), tenured members enjoy job protection and security as members of the American Federation of Musicians. Dismissal can only be made for cause which must be proven to an arbitration panel, often made up of peer members of the orchestra...Many orchestras make either audio or television recordings. Current AFM scale for a three hour recording session (symphonic scale) is approximately $350.00 not including yearly residual royalty payments made to the individual musicians."

What is the origin of the tuba?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The shape of the tuba has been changed through out the ages. The original shape of the tuba came from an instrument called a ophicleide. It was a form of the tuba except it had no valves. Later on Johann Gottfried Moritz and Wilheim Wieprecht invented a keyed ophicleide. The shape of the tuba was always changing through out the years. Well in 1845 a man by the name of Adolfe Sax had created a family of saxophone horns. He had these ranging from the soprano and the contrabass. The contrabass resembled a lot of what the modern tuba resembles now and that's where the modern shape of the tuba came from.

Later on though a band leader by the name of John Philip Sousa got in contact with C. G. Conn and they created a more "audience-friendly" version of the tuba which is now known as the sousaphone.

Who used the tuba most?

Asked by Wiki User

Prussian Patent No. 19 was granted to Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht and Carl Moritz on September 12, 1835 for a "basstuba" in F1. The original Wieprecht and Moritz instrument used five valves of the Berlinerpumpen type that were the forerunners of the modern rotary valve.

The addition of valves made it possible to play low in the harmonic series of the instrument and still have a complete selection of notes. Prior to the invention of valves, brass instruments were limited to notes in the harmonic series, and were thus generally played very high with respect to their fundamental pitch. Harmonics starting three octaves above the fundamental pitch are about a whole step apart, making a useful variety of notes possible.

The ophicleide used a cup-shaped brass instrument mouthpiece but employed keys and tone holes similar to those of a modern saxophone. Another forerunner to the tuba was the serpent, a bass brass instrument that was shaped in a wavy form to make the tone holes accessible to the player. Tone holes changed the pitch by providing an intentional leak in the bugle of the instrument. While this changed the pitch, it also had a pronounced effect on the timbre. By using valves to adjust the length of the bugle the tuba produced a smoother tone that eventually led to its popularity.

Adolphe Sax, like Wieprecht, was interested in marketing systems of instruments from soprano to bass, and developed a series of brass instruments known as saxhorns. The instruments developed by Sax were generally pitched in E-flat and B-flat, while the Wieprecht "basstuba" and the subsequent Cerveny contrabass tuba were pitched in F and C (see below on pitch systems). Sax's instruments gained dominance in France, and later in Britain and America, as a result of the popularity and movements of instrument makers such as Gustave Auguste Besson (who moved from France to Britain) and Henry Distin (who found his way eventually to America).

What vibrates in a tuba?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The actual instrument itself is what vibrates.

For example when you hit a cymbal, you can sometimes see the brass vibrating, and also if you touch the cymbal while it is making a sound you can feel the vibrations on your hand.

There are many instruments that look the same as a tuba, but are a different size so produce notes at a different pitch. These include euphonium, baritone and tenor horn. Trumpets and cornets are like a very small tuba turned on its side.

What is the difference between a tuba and a sousaphone?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An English horn is a woodwind instrument, a member of the oboe family, about one third longer than an oboe and souding a perfect fifth lower. It makes its sound by the vibration of a double reed, again much like an oboe.

A tuba is a low brass instrument, also pitched in the key of F. It makes sound by the buzzing of the lips into a mouthpiece, much like a trumpet.

The two are quite dissimilar instruments.

How may octaves the tuba plays?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1. that is a stupid question because there are no "highest notes". Even pianos can be made with more keys.

2. A tuba player and other brass player have no specific range. With expirience comes higher and lower range through daily exersices like range builders. As a senior in high school I have a range of the lowest Bb on an normal piano and up to the F above middle C. So a professional should be able to hit your "highest notes"

What is the tubas mouth piece called?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well that all depends on what horn you're playing, what tone you're trying to achieve, how often you play, and a number of other factors as well. You could try talking to a music educator, or going to http://www.wwbw.com and emailing the customer service. They may have some useful tips.

I personally play the Perantucci PT-48 for solo work, and a Conn-Helleberg 120 Standard Model for band work. I'm also in the process of researching Neil Sanders mouthpieces for sousaphone work.

So, a good general playing mouthpiece would probably be a Conn-Helleberg 120 Standard (120S), or a generic 25B. For solo work, I'd have to recommend a Roger Bobo Solo model.

I hope that my answer was useful.
