Tennessee became the 16th U.S. state when it joined the Union on June 1, 1796. Tennessee was the last of the Southern states to declare secession from the Union during the Civil War. It was admitted to the Confederacy on July 2, 1861 becoming the eleventh state to join the Confederacy. Tennessee was readmitted to the Union on July 24, 1866 at the end of the war.
