Alaska is the largest state in the United States with a total mass of 663,267.26 square miles.

The amazing part to this fact is that Texas is typically the uneducated answer to this question. Interestingly, Texas is the 2nd largest state in the United States but only has a total mass of 268,580.82 square miles, less than half of Alaska.

Rhode Island, which is no larger than most islands of any country weighs in as the smallest state in the US at an astounding 1545.05 square miles.

Alaska is by far the largest state in the US at 663,267 square miles (1,717,854 sq km).

Texas is a distant second at 268,820 square miles (696,241 sq km).

When Alaska was added to the Union, it increased the size of the US by almost 20 percent.

There is a joke that is sometimes used to aggravate proud Texans that Alaska was considering splitting into two states so that they could be the TWO biggest states in the USA (relegating Texas to 3rd). In fact if Alaska were split into equal thirds it would be the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th biggest states. It could be carved into two states bigger than Texas and still have enough left to form a third state that was bigger than 19 of the current states.

Alaska is BIG.
