Equationa and expansion do not refer to the same things.

An equation is something like: x + 1 = 5

The equation can then be solved to find the value of x (in this case it is 4).

An expansion usually refers to expanding out brackets or something similar.

For example:

2(x+1) = 2x + 2

or

(x+1)2 = x2 + 2x + 1
