Yes, but it has 39 mEq/L of Na and Cl and always contains 5% dextrose for osmolality reasons..

No, you can not. By definition NORMAL saline is a 0.9% sodium chloride solution. Any other concentration is simply not normal. You can infuse 0.25% saline, either with or without dextrose if you desire. Osmolarity is a concern without dextrose, but is clinically warranted in rare situations.

Why can you have Edema after an IV?

You give IV fluid to the patient. Generally there are two types of fluids. IV normal saline or Ringer's lactate and 5 % dextrose. All of them have same osmotic pressure as the body fluid has got. But the dextrose is rapidly used by body to give you plane water. So the normal saline and Ringer's lactate solution is distributed across the extracellular compartment. Dextrose, that means plane water is distributed across the whole body fluid. Normal adult has got 14 liters of extracellular fluid and 28 liters of fluid inside the cells. You have the fluid in the body till kidneys excrete the same. Respective fluid spreads across the respective cellular compartment. It gives you edema.

A solution of 30 percent acid and a solution of 60 percent acid are to be mixed to produce 50 liters of 57 percent acid How many liters of each solution should be used?

t = number of liters of 30% acid solution s = number of liters of 60% acid solution t+s=57 .30t+.60s=.50*57 t=57-s .30(57-s)+.60s=.50*57 .30*57 -.30s +.60s = .50*57 .30s = .50*57 - .30*57 = .20*57 s = .20*57/.30 = 38 liters of 30% solution t = 57 - s = 57-38 = 19 liters of 60% solution

Compare and contrasts solutions and suspensions and give a common example of each type of mixture?

A solution is a mixture in which the components are evenly distributed throughout. A mixture of water and undissolved materials that do not settle out is a suspension. An example of a solution is salt dissolved in water. An example of a suspension is nonfat milk.

What is the pH of 7 percent NaOH solution?

How to work it out - Calculate the concentration of the solution in terms of molarity. Calculate the hydrogen ion concentration from the fact that multiplying the hydrogen and hydroxide concentrations (in mols per litre) will always give 1x10-14. Take the -log10 of the hydrogen ion concentration.

What best describes half-normal saline?

"Normal Saline" is 0.9% salt in water. This is also known as Isotonic Saline, and it contains the same percentage of salt as is normally found in the human body. The taste of tears are a good way of understanding Isotonic or Normal Saline.Half Normal Saline is 0.45% saline in water, and is called Hypotonic Saline. It is dangerous to give this in an IV unless prescribed by a physician after consulting laboratory tests on the patient. This is due to its osmolality.Formal Saline, or Formalin, is 10% salt in water. It is used to preserve lab specimens and in embalming bodies. Formalin is an extremely toxic chemical, and ordinary people should not come into contact with it.

Is it ok give normal saline to a drunk?

Yes, it is "OK". Alcohol causes dehydration so it is usually beneficial.

How many liters of a 90 percent acid solution must be mixed with a 15 percent acid solution to get 600 L of a 80 percent solution?

Mixing 80 liters of 15% solution and 520 liters of 90% solution will give 600 liters of 80% solution.

Explain what is meant by an isotonic solution?

You have 60 % of water in your body. 40% in the intro-cellular compartment and 20 % in the Extra cellular compartment. So it comes to be 40 liters in a 'Average' man weighing 70 kg.It means 28 liters in intro-cellular and 14 liters in extra cellular compartment. Human body has carried with it the part of sea, probably as a extra cellular compartment.Isotonic means that tonicity of fluid equal to body fluid.In extra cellular compartment, Sodium chloride is present mainly. It contains 'about' 150 mili mole of Sodium chloride.One mole of Sodium chloride contains 58.5 gram/liter of it.Mass number of Sodium being 23 and that of Chlorine is 35.5. So added together it makes 58.5 gram/liter. One mole of Glucose contains 180 grams/ liter. (C 6 H 12 O 6 means 126 plus 112 plus 16* 6, it means mass numbers of the respective elements.) (It means 1000 mili mole/liter.) So 9 gram/liter or 0.9 % of sodium chloride or 0.9 gram/100 ml, makes Isotonic saline solution. So Isotonic solution is compatible with 'Human' normal saline solution.It will neither make cells to shrink nor swell. So 0.45 % Sodium chloride solution is Hypo-tonic and 0.9% Sodium chloride with 5 % Glucose solution is Hyper-tonic.(In your body, Glucose will be rapidly utilized to give energy and you get Isotonic saline solution.) Normal saline solution means in which 1 mole of molecules dissolve/ liter and is a term used in chemistry. So when you say Normal saline, it means it contains 58.5 gram/liter of sodium chloride and will kill the patient in no time, after few infusions. So previously human normal saline and then 'Isotonic' saline solution is the correct term to be used. The normal saline solution available in market is not "Normal'. It is 'Isotonic' solut
