All three wrote papers on various aspects of computing.
- Babbage's papers were on mechanical general purpose decimal computers, but he never built any.
- Von Neuman's were on an electronic general purpose binary computer already being built as a follow on to ENIAC. He actually had little to do with the origin of the ideas in the paper,but he soon built his own faster machine.
- Alan Turing wrote a paper in 1936 that laid out in rough form all the parts of a functional computer. But as the paper was simply a mathematical proof (of something many mathematics did not want to hear) his machine was ignored until well after his suicide in the 1950s.
