The noblest of all roman virtues was?

There might not be a definite answer to this question, but I would say pietas. Piestas ("dutifulness") meant not only doing your duty in terms of religion, but also supporting the Roman state, respecting your father and ancestors, and supporting your familty. Aeneas epitomized pietas. The English words pious and piety are derived from pietas. For more, see this good blog post: http://everything2.com/title/Roman%2520virtues

Difference between mercury and alcohol?

Mercury is an element, a metal. Alcohol is the name of a familty of organic compounds made up of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in various combinations. The only obvious similarity of the two substances is that some alcohols (ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, C2H5OH, for example ) share a common freezing point with mercury of about minus 40 degrees (Celsius or Fahrenheit), making them suitable for use in outdoor thermometers.

Why do they sent soldiers to fight in wars?

easy explanation- soldiers may sign up for social advancement the flag and patriotism but they fight because the man next to them is depending on them. They fight for nothing else but protecting their brothers in arms not for medals, patriotism, the flag or the country that may be why they sign up but they fight for the man next to them that WILL die if they do night fightSoldiers fight for a variety of reasons which are listed in importance:*note that some or all of the factors can be missing and therefore making the remain factors more important.*also this is a general concept, there will always be exceptions.*this is assuming a soldier who has experienced combat and knows what its like. Killing a person is very disturbing especially if its done up close and if you know him or atleast hear him cry to loved ones as he dies. (of course there's the 2% who overcome this who are either indirect fighters (where deaths are just like a video game or just numbers ) or snipers as their qualifications lean towards no remorse)(i use he because the majority of troops are men and i don't care about political correctness)1. for the safety of his buddies in the unit.2. for self-preservation.3. to end the fighting. (for self-preservation)4. for the military consequences if he doesn't. Ex:excution for desertion(for self-preservation)5. for religious conviction.(hey, god's never wrong)6. for revenge.7. for political or logical convictions.(less important than religion because it needs a reason with some logic)8. for economic or social reasons. (money or to escape some poorness or military tradition)9. pride and prestige.10. patriotism or heroism.Explanation1. soldiers are taught the safety of the group depends on him and he can prevent harm to his unit, therefore the same applies to others in the group and it creates the feeling that they are each other's protector. With the creation of mutal trust with what they value most (their lives) a soldier feel responsible for the others as he feels they are protecting him and he's doing the same. (so if a buddy dies the soldier will feel that he has failed his buddy even when his buddy's putting his life on the line for him)*this is only the case with long-term soldiers who have learned to trust each other, not conscripts, mixed units, or tours of duty.2. closely linked with the first . If the first is not ther then this is self explanitory3. A person will want to live and more so if he has strong bonds with his unit as then he will also let his unit down. Closely linked with the second(self explanitory).4. closely linked with the second (self explanitory). the side effect of this is that the soldier becomes calculative, constantly balancing his chances in combat versus his chances if he flees or otherwise.5. Well god's never wrong, what else is ther to say.6. Emotion is better than logic, as people start to think they will see better ways than fighting and all our politicians and big-business would hate that.(the only thing more important to politicians and big-business thanmoney, power, and influence is more money, more power, and more influence)7. Some people will emtionally follow political or flawed logical convictions and convince themselves that its logical.Problem with this is that fighting is least logical choice and eventually they come around or find another reason.8. Lots of militaries will either convice poor kids their only way to make a living or get training for jobs is to join the army. Or alot of social pressure will be put on kids to belong in a military oriented community or familty(tradition). For course there's mercenaries but they don't expect to die as they're fighting to improve their standard of their life, not lose it.Another problem is that socially they are fighting for social pressure forced upon them which isn't far from live or die but instead its disgrace. Where as kids who join for economic reasons do so for better lives, they don't expect to be in combat (and recruiter lie alot).9. Some people will fight for pride and prestige that they feel they're entitled to or can't receive in a civilian life. This is more common along the officers and people higher up who enjoy boosting their ego or the power of command.(some people will fight only for this but usually emotion, money, and idealogies are more important.)10. Patriotism or heroism are often the first things to go as bullet fly around. They are forms of delusion that are often dispelled by combat (and war's not so black and white now a days) you can shield them from combat but then their not fighting and therefore not soldiers.177'phew'
