When slaves arrived in America they did what they were told. They were not permitted to think for themselves but comply with the directions of whoever was in charge of them or they would be punished, often brutally. They were usually loaded off ships into a warehouse area, given just enough nourishment that kept them alive until the could be sold or auctioned off to the highest bidder. After the sales, they had to do whatever their owner told them. This was the rest of their lives. Slaves arriving in America today are brought in under cover, and do whatever their "owners" tell them or suffer a consequence. Slaves today don't usually remain enslaved for a lifetime. Because they are kept in secret, they will only be slaves until their enslavement is uncovered by authorities, they outlive their usefulness to their "masters", escape or die early.
