Yes. It existed before human beings did, or before the solar system.
The answer is that there was no measurement before about 1630 when a scale was first used. Before this there were what can be called thermoscopes, which used an enclosed column of air to show change in temperature, but these were also sensitive to barometric pressure, and no-one seems to have tried to devise a scale of temperature. When people say there was a warm period in the 1300's or whenever, this can only be deduced from records of what was grown, and tree ring records, and other such records.
