Yes, over time the heating element can break, wires can break, or the thermostat can become defective. They will however last for years if they are quality made. No electric device lasts forever.

Baseboard Heaters?

On an 50A circuit should you be able to turn all of three of your electric heaters on at the same time without tripping the main breaker?

Check the amp rating of the heater and do the math. Electric heaters pull A LOT of current, so I'm guessing you'd be near the 50amp max.

How much cost per hours for electric heater in Toronto?

To answer this question a total wattage of the heaters and the cost per kilowatt hour must be stated. The cost per kilowatt hour can be obtained from your Ontario Hydro bill. Multiply the total wattage by the length of time in hours that the heaters are in operation. This will give you the cost of operation of the heaters.

Can a water heater be used to supply water to baseboard heating?

Yes. You might want to check to see what recommended temperature is for water entering the baseboard units and insure the water heater will meet that. Something else to consider is that there will need to be a pump in the water circuit to circulate the water. A tank type water heater would also work to store hot water until needed by the baseboard units in an instance where heat might be generated at a time not needed by the baseboard units.

How many watts of electric heaters set on low?

The wattage of electric base board heaters does not change because the thermostat is set on low. The wattage is a fixed value on the heater because of its internal resistance element. The thermostat set on low shuts off at a lower temperature than a thermostat that is set on high. It is the time interval that governs the amount of heat that the heater produces when the thermostat calls for heat. Once the room heats up to the temperature that the thermostat is set at, the heater shuts off. The thermostat is just a temperature switch.

What is more economical 110 or 220 electric baseboard heaters?

Not counting the equipment or installation cost, and assuming the cost of electricity is the same in either system, running cost depends on the power consumed. So check the wattage of the heater. Consider also that the heater may not be on all the time to maintain a temperature. If a heater has twice the power (not voltage) of another and is on for half the time it works out the same.

Do electric heaters have side effects?

Yes. Electric heater or any heater reduces the humidity of the room. Reduced humidity for long time reduces the water content of body. Room heaters that burn fuel in a locked room also consume more oxygen. And, it may lead to oxygen insufficiency for human breathing. This does not apply to electric heaters.

Do electric water heaters have pilot lights?

No, electric water heaters do not need a pilot light. The heating element is heated by an electric current (similar to the 'eye' on an electric stove or the heaters in a toaster). When the circuit is completed, electric current flows through the element, and it gets hot, and when the electricity is turned off, the element starts cooling. In a gas water heater, the pilot light is a flame, which is always burning. When it's time to heat up the water, the main gas valve is opened, and the pilot light ignites the gas, so that the main burner heats up.

What types of space heaters can I get?

space heaters may use natural gas or propane, but they are most commonly electric. space heaters may use natural gas or propane, but they are most commonly electric. Modern electric space heaters usually have ceramic heating elements rather than nichrome wires, and are fan-forced with a blower or squirrel-cage fan. These distribute heat much more evenly, and allow them to be encased in plastic, nearly eliminating the chance of burns or fire. Mine is electric. Inside is oil that it heated by the electricity and then circulated out by a fan and vent. Looks like a mini version of an old time range.

Why are electric heaters used in so many houses?

Electric heaters are a popular choice with people who are looking to reduce home heating costs. Many people spend the majority of time in one or two rooms. Rather than turn up the thermostat which would result in higher overall costs, they choose to purchase an electric heater which can warm up a small area for much less.

What is the benefit of an oil filled baseboard heater vs. non-oil-filled?

If you are comparing oil filled baseboard heaters with ordinary old 50/60's style baseboard convection heating units. the major difference is in energy efficiency. The units will both heat a room of similar size with approximately the same time required (unless all doors and windows are closed - in which an oil-based heater's psychological impact will be most obvious. "A watched pot never boils" is the axiom here.) The idea is to obtain greater, or at least the same amount of heat, in approximately the same time, but with more energy efficiency. IMHO, any baseboard heating system is less efficient than other modes due to the usual location at the side of the room, as opposed to the center. However, if one MUST use baseboard heating, THINK GREEN!

What type of electric element do electric heaters use?

It depends on the size of the element in the heater. It should say what its rating is on the appliance. If there is no rating then the best way to work it out is to turn everything else off and see how much the electricity meter registers in one hour. If it is 2 kilowatts for instance then then the element is 2000 watts and you know it will use 2kw per hour. This assumes it won't be turned on and off by its thermostat which normally happens as it reaches it's final temperature.

Can a power change electric energy into heat energy?

Electrical energy is changed into heat energy ... intentionally ... every time you use a blow drier, toaster, electric oven, baseboard heater, electric clothes iron, curling iron, electric hot water heater, soldering iron, or coffee machine. Electrical energy is changed into some amount of heat energy ... unintentionally ... and is lost, whenever you use anything else electric.

Preventing Fire Damage?

When installing baseboard heaters, it is important to make sure that you do not install them in places where they pose a fire hazard. Remember that these can get very hot to the touch. If they come in contact with books or other flammable materials, they could start a fire in your home. You need to choose places that are out of the way, places where such things will not become a problem. If you just take a little bit of time to locate these types of places, you will be very happy that you did when you install the heaters.
