If you could measure precisely enough, they would be slightly different, but both have coefficients of thermal expansion that are close enough to linear that you probably would not be able to see the difference visually. Keep in mind that the boiling point of the liquid used in alcohol thermometers may not be too far off from 60 °C so if you set one of your points too close to the boiling point (or above it), you will get skewed graduations.

How long does it take a car traveling 40 mph to come to a complete stop?

For a car with good brakes and a length of 4m, a dry road with a driver with average reaction time it will take approximately 36m/118 feet/nine car lengths for it to stop. This can be divided up into two sections the thinking distance/reaction distance of 12m and a braking distance of 24m. Like the previous answer stated the braking distance can be changed depending on the road surface type and weather conditions or if the car is fitted with an Anti-lock Braking System Thinking distance can be increased by drinking alcohol or taking some types of drugs.

Why is alcohol 70 percent?

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol is usually around 70% (by volume) because this is the optimum concentration for its action as a disinfectant. At lower concentrations it is not as effective. However at higher concentrations its effectiveness declines because of the way in which it works. Alcohol kills cells in the target organisms by causing the coagulation of proteins which it contacts. If very strong alcohol is used then it penetrates the cell wall of the organism and coagulates the proteins which are immediately inside the cell wall and this mass of coagulated protein protects the inner parts of the cell from the alcohol. Then, if conditions improve, the cell can recover. Alcohol which is less concentrated works in the same way but because it coagulates the proteins more slowly, more of the alcohol is able to penetrate deeper into the cell and so is more effective in destroying the cell.

How many ounces of a 25 percent alcohol solution must be mixed with 9 ounces of a 30 percent alcohol solution to make a 28 percent alcohol solution?

Let a be the number of ounces of 25% alcohol required. Then, 25a + (30x9) = 28(9 + a) 25a + 270 = 252 + 28a 3a = 18 a = 6 Then 6 ounces of 25% alcohol + 9 ounces of 30% alcohol produces 15 ounces of 28% alcohol.

the alcohol in thermometers are either non-potable alcohol or mercury and if you drank either then you would be sick. so yes it is sort of toxic.

Compare the expansion of mercury with alcohol?

Mercury expands more evenly than alcohol. This is why thermometers that contain mercury are more accurate than those that contain alcohol. However, alcohol freezes at a temperature much lower than mercury, so it is better used in thermometers in extreme cold conditions.

How are mercury thermometers used today?

Mercury thermometers are rarely used, except in lab thermometers. For human use, they have been replaced by dyed alcohol glass thermometers, or electronic digital thermometers.
