No. Extended family means that grandparents, cousins, uncles and whatever live under the same roof. As opposed to the nuclear family of parents and children.
extended family
All people have extended families. Some cultures make more of them than others do.
A nuclear family with more than 6 children is usually considered as a big family. Polygamous families and the extended families are generally considered as big size.
An extended family is one which consists of parents, children, grand children and sometimes the sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews of the parents. Sometimes extended families live near each other, but most often modern extended families live some distance apart and come together only during formal reunions, special holidays gatherings, and for marriages and funerals. A polygamous family is one in which one person has more than one spouse at the same time. The two best known forms are polygyny (one man having more than one wife), or as polyandry (one woman having more than one husband). A polygamous family is one in which the spouses and their children live together and operate as a large family unit. A polygamous family may be considered to be one particular type of extended family.
It depends how long your sentence is for. If you're serving less than one year, I wouldn't use extended family very much. Your "nuclear" family should be able to visit you and provide you with what you need. If you're serving a longer sentence, like 25-to-life, then you can REALLY use your extended family then.

When people move to more urban areas, having extended family is much less common than it is in rural areas. It has also been shown that people have smaller families in the city than they do in rural settings such as on farms.
