No; while true that prime numbers can be used by intelligence agencies--and others--in creating cryptographic algorithms, primes of outrageous size are not needed and are not practical. And mathematicians, aided by members of a distributed computing project, have already calculated proven prime numbers up to 243,112,609 - 1. However, there is one organization, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), that IS paying for the discovery and verification of extremely large prime numbers. The award for a prime of at least one million decimal digits has already been let; the next award is for primes of at least ten million decimal digits. These are extremely large numbers, impossible to write out here. What to speak of 243,112,609 - 1, a prime as "small" as one in the range of only 2100,000 - 1 is a number with over thirty-thousand zeroes in it! The EFF, which bills itself as "the first civil liberties group dedicated to protecting the health and growth of the internet," is promoting this contest "to spur the technology of cooperative networking and encourage Internet users worldwide to join together in solving scientific problems involving massive computation" and thus "encourage the harmonious integration of Internet innovations into the whole of society."
