The simple answer is that people need to count things, count money, and measure things.

The study of mathematics allows literacy in numerate contexts. This means that one can then successfully emulate situations from in reality, or alternatively create one's own reality, using a mathematical model of the world. Without the study of maths, we would not be able to do this.

A simple example is knowing how much change to expect when buying a chocolate bar, and complex examples extend into predictions in the economy and in nature, through recognising patterns.

The study of mathematics beyond the cumpulsory level allows for more extensive techniques in predicting and modelling phenomena, and the majority of physics and computer science can be reduced to mathematics comprehendible at these stages.
