They are not alike really as population is a characteristic of community. For example, a community exists of 1270 males and 1306 females for a total of 2576 people making up the community. In these 2576 people, 37% are black, 2% Asian, 12% Latino and 49% white. Just like population these Demographics are characteristics of a community. You could just as easily identify % of disabled, break it up into age groups, analyze the tax rate, crime rate or anything else that identifies the community.

In more simpler terms if you look at a person you say that that person is a person, that would be your community. When you start talking about she is a Latino, with brown eyes, red hair, 5"8' tall with big feet than you are talking about characteristics which would be like indicating the population.
