Atomic number is the number of protons and electrons in a neutral atom. Atomic Mass minus atomic number is the number of neutrons in the atom. Neutrons and protons have relatively equal masses and electrons are comparatively "weightless" therefore, the sum of the masses of protons and neutrons equals the atomic mass.
