Math doesn't make you "smart in life" Having a good understanding of math can however help you in many different parts of your life. Your career may be of a technical nature and understanding advanced mathematics may help you to succeed and even get paid/promoted faster than the "other guy"
At home, knowing math can help in many ways including home improvements and I can tell you that I hated Algebra as a youth and couldn't see any good reason to learn it but as an adult I guarantee that I'm very grateful that i understand Algebra and I find myself using it far more often than I would have ever guessed. It doesn't make me smarter but it does make my job easier, whether that job is a career type job or a job I'm tackling at home.
