Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible.

Example: 45 points earned on a test totaling 50 points. 45 ÷ 50 = .90 or 90%

(part / whole) x 100 = percentage

As an example, if you want to know how much 20 is out of 50:

(20 / 50) x 100 = 40%

This formula can also be used to find the whole when you know the part and the percentage:

(20 x whole) / 100 = 4

So, the whole number would be 20.

When you know the whole and the percentage, you can use this formula to find the part:
