I sincerely apologize that you think this is a silly question. It is something I learned on our award winning math team in school, but couldn't remember exactly how to explain it. I was simply hoping someone out there could refresh my memory, but apparently to ask a question on answers.com is a foolish thing to do. And yes, I was finally able to speak with my very intelligent brother and another friend who is a math professor to get the explanation I was seeking.
