Interesting question. The answer depends on how you define a chairperson. In a corporation, a chairperson can be the Chairman of the Board of Directors or it could be committee chairman.

The best way to solver conflict is as follows:

  • Bring the opposing parties together
  • Ask each to explain their position. What is the nature of the conflict from their perspective?
  • Ask each person what needs to happen to resolve the conflict
  • Have the two parties to work together to come up with a solution they both can live with.
  • It has to be a win-win solution. If one party goes away thinking they lost, then the conflict has not been resolved. If both parties feel good about the solution, then the conflict has been resolved

This process is helpful and effective regardless of whether you are a Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Chairperson of a Committee, or a Manager at any level.
