Some people can look at the fraction 4/8 and know that the simplest form is 1/2 but what's really happening is they are dividing 4 and 8 by 4 to get the answer. 4 is the GCF of 4 and 8. If you divide a fraction by the GCF of the numerator and the denominator, the result will be the simplest form of the fraction.
