Example: 30 and 42
Factor them.
2 x 3 x 5 = 30
2 x 3 x 7 = 42
Select the common factors.
2 x 3 = 6, the GCF
Since 180 is a factor of 540, it is automatically the GCF.
You need at least two numbers to find a GCF. IF that's 3, 4 and 5, the GCF of consecutive nonzero integers is 1.

Finding the LCM will help you add and subtract fractions. Finding the GCF will help you reduce fractions.
You need at least two numbers to find either of those.
5r3s5 + 10r2s2 - 15r4s2 (the GCF is 5r2s2) = 5r2s2(rs3 + 2 - 3r2)
I factor because the problem I'm solving calls for it. It's the fastest and easiest way to solve for the GCF or LCM.
if it is =0, you can divide the whole equation by 5 to leave 2y+3=0
It is 12 because 12 is the highest common factor of both number that will divide into them evenly and leaving no remainders.
Finding the cube root of 3 would not have helped.
