Example 42 times 58. First 50: 5 times 40 is 200, and 5 times the 2 is 10 (total 210) so 50 times means an extra 0 on the end of that, =2100. Remember that result. Then the 8: 8 times 42 is 336. Add together 2100 and 336 : answer 2436. When I was young there was absolutely no other way of doing multiplication. Later there were slide-rules, then logs and long, long after, calculators. I have since seen shop keepers use calculators to multiply 4.50 by 2
At that point, it's easier to memorize the seven times table or use a calculator.
