Early humanoids will have been aware of some aspects of mathematics - even if they did not recognise that they were doing calculations. For example: is my "gang" stronger than their gang? This involves using weighted averages: not just numbers but usefulness in battle. It is no good having a big army - of 20 babies against 3 strong warriors! They would probably have been aware of how hard and in what direction to throw a rock or a spear to hit an enemy or prey. They might not have used Newton's Laws of Motion explicitly, but that does not mean they were not using mathematical concepts.
