PEMDAS, Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction, is a mnemonic for the order of operations in any mathematical expression, not just those in algebra.

Perhaps "Wright or Wrong: Teaching the Order of Operations" (Schrock & Morrow, 1993) is the earliest publication of the mnemonic.

The standard order of operations has been around a very long time, of course. I seem to vaguely remember this mnemonic from the 70s or 80s, but it was presented as a flawed, misleading device (e.g multiplication is really same order of precedence as division, and addition is same order of precedence as subtraction), so I never relied on it. I'm not confident in that recollection, anyway
