Call me delusional, but I cannot shake the feeling that there was a lot of

other stuff that was supposed to go along with this question. Like maybe

actually seeing the two cultures, knowing where the seed bacilli came from,

or knowing something about how their preparation or incubation might have

differed.

A 24 hour culture of Bacillus will usually be in the logarithmic phase wherein the cells have maximum metabolic activity. On the other hand, a 72 hour culture will have passed the logarithmic phase and entered the stationary phase. Some of the cells could also possibly be in the phase of decline.
