A vortex is a region in a fluid where the flow is mainly a circular motion about an axis. Whirlpools, tornadoes and hurricanes are common examples in nature. They are also produced in the wake of fast moving vehicles - boats, planes etc.

Vortices are important in the study of fluid dynamics- among other things.
