by multiplying the whole number by one like below:

E.g. 4+ 2/4 = 4*(4/4) + 2/4 = 16/4 + 2/4 = (16+2)/4 = 18/4 = 9/2

4/4 = 1

You write it as 4/4 so that the whole number and the fraction have a common denominator (the number on the bottom). Once both numbers have the same denominator you can add the numerators (the numbers on the top) and divide it by the common denominator.

How do your borrow from a whole number when subtracting fractions?

A mixed number has a whole number and a fraction. A fraction is a number that is less than whole and that has a denominator underneath a numerator. To add or subtract mixed numbers, add or subtract the fractions, then add or subtract the whole numbers. If the fraction portion of a mixed number, such as 2 5/6, is more than the fraction portion of the mixed number you're trying to subtract from, such as 3 1/6, you must borrow from the whole number of the mixed number you're trying to subtract from to make its fraction bigger... How do you make a mixed number in to an improper fraction?

The mixed number consists of a whole number and a fraction. Multiply the denominator of the fraction portion by the whole number and to this product add the numerator of the fraction portion. This value is the numerator of the new improper fraction. The denominator of the new improper fraction is the same as the denominator of the original fraction portion of the mixed number.
