You take the whole number, multiply that by the denominator, then add the numerator. Whatever number you get, put that over the original denominator.
Example: 2 3/4
2 (whole) x 4 (denominator) + 3 (numerator) = 11. Take 11 and put it over the denominator (4) you'd get 11/4
