The note bearing the picture of Sir Edward Elgar is no longer accepted as legal tender.

The reason is an enigma, and may have several variations. Individual banks are free to

decide whether they will exchange the old notes. But the Bank of England will exchange

any obsolete note, even those printed before WW-II, for its full face value.
