Be very very careful about this because this is an area where the English language is ambiguous. Many people use metres squared and squared metres to mean the same thing. In fact, squared metres can be written metres2 or m2 which most people will read as metres squared!

Having issued that warning, 5.6 metres squared should mean a square are whose sides are of length 5.6 metres and so its are is 5.6*5.6 squared metres. Thus

X metres squared should be X2 square metres.
