I am from Canada, and when walking past a large maple tree on our street I asked myself the same question. After a bit of searching I found this formula:
1. Determine the species of your tree.
2. With a tape measure, find the circumference of the tree (in inches) 4 1/2 feet above the ground.
3. Determine the diameter of your tree.
(Diameter = Circumference divided by 3.14{pi})
4. Calculate the age of the tree. Formula: Diameter X Growth Factor

Silver Maple 3.0
I wonder what the neighbours will think when they see me standing on their lawn with a measuring tape:)
Someone who studies the age of a tree by the rings on the inside is called a dendrochronologist

Known to live over 1000 years of age however,it does depend on the tree and how it is treated!
estimate or approximation
It is a rough estimate of its age based on its physical and spatial relationships with the rock around it.
Although there has been very little done in the study of the root systems of Maple trees there is a small amount of research performed on trees aging between 40 to 60 years that has shown the roots of a maple tree can spread up to 25 meters although this is dependent on the size, the location (proximity to other vegetation) and the age of the Maple tree.

Go into space and look at the amount of circles (just like what you do to a tree)
You must be 13.
I think 13
The age of a tree is calculated by taking a core of wood from the tree and counting the annual rings in the wood.
the norway maple is not particularly long lived; its maximum age is believed to be around 250-300 years old. flowering occurs in mid-april and a large amount of seeds are mature in september that is dispersed by the wind and animals. the leaves of the norway maple are often the last to change. They keep their green color until early november before turning into a bright yellow

Foresters can tell you the age of a tree based on the diameter of the trunk based on past years of rain fall. They then look to see ages of trees that have been cut down and do the rest of the math after.
Tree rings. Each year, a new ring is formed in the secondary xylem of stem.

An oak tree is 6 times as old as a pine tree and an elm tree is 6 years younger than the oak tree. In 3 years, the age of the elm will be 3 times the age of the pine. How old is the oak tree now?
